Well this is awkward. Turns out fatherhood is actually quite time consuming, not the effortless, hobbysome pursuit I'd been planning for. As a result I've found myself confusingly short of free time. I'm still eating, but I'm getting less of a chance to write about it (although you can read my contributions to Auckland's Top 100 CBD eateries in this month's Metro magazine).
Luckily I have a crutch to lean on in these hard times, and that's my buddy Alexander Bisley, who's in charge of keeping an eye on comings and goings on the Wellington food scene for me. Below are his picks, updated from a year ago.
Wellingtonians and capitalphiles please feel free to try out my new “Comments On” setting – another furtive attempt to get someone else to do my work while I change nappies. Feel free also to challenge the gustatory credibility of a man who's lost 27 kg in one year. Congratulations Al!

Lovliest coffee and cheesecake experience = Memphis belle. Go the Chemex coffee.
ReplyDeleteBest dessert pie = john key lime pie at sweet mothers kitchen. Divine!
Yes! Kayu Manis do brilliant Malay. Their stuff tastes really fresh and is a welcome contrast to the stodgy ol' satay houses. And Kayu Manis make their own lovely fluffy roti.
ReplyDeleteI'm also in agreement with Flying Burrito Bros being overrated. They do adequate Mexican, but their prices to not reflect the mere adequacy. But where is good for Mexican in Wellington? The tiny Viva Mexico down Left Bank shows promise, but is more of the light meals/street food type than proper sit-down dining. The search continues.
P.S. It's Otega Fish Shack and Bar, not snack.
Er, Ortega Fish Shack and Bar.
ReplyDelete(That's Muphry's Law.)
Thanks Victoria,
ReplyDeleteOne of the tricks of my hardout regime the last 9 months has been no dessert, but I'll have to try one of that duo for a treat sometime. I did decadently break the rule for my birthday with a sublime lemon posset from Ortega Fish Shack and Bar, garnished with immaculate fresh strawberries and lashings of imported Persian candyfloss.
Robyn, I agree Viva Mexico is better. There's a new Mexican place opening soon between Ortega and the Embassy, which is probably worth a try. (The Sandwiches one was tres bland when I went.)
PS. Best Thai: Phu Thai Esarn, especially their seafood salad.
