Some restaurants are very good but, for
whatever reason, don’t get the buzz that they deserve. I don’t know why. Something
to do with coolness, or fashionability probably, which sounds quite shallow but
is probably just as important as the food given that people go out not just to

I had a very pleasant evening out over the weekend. Having owed my schoolmate Rich a decent dinner for a number of months now, I spent quite some time on Saturday looking for a restaurant that would feel sufficiently upmarket, without him feeling like I was going to place my hand tenderly on his knee between courses and tell him how much our relationship meant to me. Salta in Three Lamps is the best cafe in Ponsonby. Well, certainly Ponsonby North, being the general area we're willing to walk to from work at number 239. If the name Salta doesn't ring a bell, maybe Atlas will – that was what it used to be called until, from what I can work out, there was some unpleasantness with the Atlas coffee people and the cafe was forced to anagrammatise.

My buddy Chris says he's discovered a new trick at restaurants: telling the maitre d' which table you want. He tried it at Takapuna Beach Cafe today and it worked pretty good, although once you get to a certain class of place, um, internationally, they might have reservations (in both senses).
